Our Puppies
Puppies are so cute and fun, but it takes more then just puppy cuddles to raise a confident, well rounded adult dog and it begins before the puppy is even born. There are many different developmental periods a puppy goes through before joining your family. This is just a snapshot of the different protocols that are done with our puppies. Puppy Culture Program
We want to raise puppies who have the best chance to become confident, stable and resilient adult dogs. To reach our goal we implemented Puppy Culture puppy raising, training and socialization protocols into our program with each one of our litters. This program works best when it is implemented for the first 12 weeks of a puppies life. We encourage our puppy families to continue with the program after the puppy joins thier family.
Neonatal Period (0-14 days)
Puppies are born blind and deaf. During this period the puppies spend most of the their hours, sleeping and eating. During this period we begin ENS from day 3-16. Puppies are stroked almost constantly and individually cuddled every day.
Early Nuerological Stimulation
Why we use Early Neurological Stimulation for our puppies. We choose to use the ENS method developed by Dr. Battaglia because it helps produce dogs who have greater tolerance of stress throughout their lifetimes. They also have more resistance to disease, a more responsive adrenal system, and a stronger heart rate and heartbeat.
Early Socialization
So puppies learn confidence, we introduce our puppies to a variety of novel people. Our goal is to have the puppies meet as close to100 new people before going home at 8 weeks old as we can. Puppies have individual snuggle time from the day they are born. This helps create a bond with people from day one.
Transitional Period (14-21 days)
During this period the puppies begin to open their eyes, toddle around, lap liquids and eliminate on their own. We are careful to protect the puppies sensitive eyes to bright light. We introduce new tactile items each day for enrichment. Brain development is optimized when puppies are raised in an enriched environment.
The Critical Socialization Period (3-12) Weeks
Puppies can eliminate on their own now and a potty area is introduced, this helps with future house training. Startle recovovery sessions begin. Puppies have a good balance of quiet time, calming classical music and habitual upsetting noises, and everyday household sounds throughout the day.
We introduce the "Puppy call" which is the first step to a formal recall. We use this call each time we bring the puppies their meals. We begin to teach our puppies to take a treat so we can begin more formal training sessions with a reward.
Giving our puppies a voice. We teach our puppies to mand. It's a way puppies ask for something using body their language, in a way that we can both understand and recognize.
We introduce our puppies to crates very early. We start with the doors open and gradually increase to closing the door for short periods of time. We feed the puppies and introduce chew time in their crates. We call this crate conditioning, this does not mean a puppy will be completely crate trained prior to going home, however the process is started. They will be very familiar with the crate and associate it with positive experiences.
Resource guarding
We want our puppies to love when we take their toys, bones or food away. We practice "trading up" when working on this skill. This is something that should continue for the rest of the puppies life. We teach our puppies and dogs they can trust human hands near their bones, toys and food.
There is no better teacher than a well behaved adult dog to show the puppies the ropes. Our puppies spend time with our well trusted adult dogs. The adult dogs help teach the puppies manners.
As you can see there is so much that goes into raising a resilient puppy. Again, this is just a small snapshot of the things we do with our puppies. It is very important that families continue on with these protocols especially during the critical socialization period.
